Endlich wieder Sonne! Die letzten Tage war es grau in grau mit Nieselregen oder mehr und dazu passenden Temperaturen. Nicht sehr angenehmen, entsprechend wenig waren wir unterwegs. Heute haben wir die endlich wieder scheinende Sonne ausgenutzt – so ganz eigentlich war ein Ausflug zum Flag Ponds Nature Park geplant, der war aber zu. Wieder zurück zu Kassiopeia wollten wir nicht direkt, also haben wir uns umgesehen, was noch so in der Nähe ist und haben Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum entdeckt. 

Im Infocenter wurden wir gleich mit einer Karte zu den Trails versorgt, noch dazu wurde uns direkt eine Führung im zugehörigen archäologischen Institut ans Herz gelegt. Bis zur Führung war es noch ein wenig Zeit, also sind wir ein Stück spazieren gegangen. Die Führung dann später war sehr interessant! Außer uns kam niemand, somit erhielten wir eine Privatführung von Christa aus München. Leider war sie schon zulange in USA und ihre Deutschkenntnisse waren nicht mehr auszubuddeln, somit war die Führung auf englisch. Der Parkbesuch inklusive Führung waren übrigens gratis!

Wir hatten beide eigentlich keine richtige Vorstellung, was uns erwartet und bekamen einen Einblick in die Arbeitsweise beim Sortieren, Präparieren, Konservieren und Katalogisieren von Fundstücken. Von kleinen wie Scherben oder Splittern bis zu Kanonen oder Teilen einer Dampfmaschine. Und wir haben gelernt, dass Archäologie durchaus die neuere Zeit einschließt – bis auf wenige Exponate war alles entweder importiert (z.B. spanische Ölamphoren, deutsche Keramik) oder Kriegsgerät aus dem Bürgerkrieg.
